Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Plan energy sector support activity
  2. WHS/OHS hazards are identified, risks assessed and control measures implemented for energy sector work preparation
  3. WHS/OHS hazards not previously identified are noted on job safety assessments and advice is sought from work supervisor
  4. Work instructions are obtained and the nature, scope and location of work is determined from the supervisor or appropriate person/s
  5. Advice is sought from supervisor or appropriate person/s to ensure work is coordinated effectively with others
  6. Materials required for work are determined in accordance with workplace procedures
  7. Tools, equipment and testing devices needed to carry out work are obtained and checked for correct operation and safety
  8. Undertake energy sector support activity
  9. Plant and equipment are checked in accordance with manufacturer guidelines/instructions, WHS/OHS requirements and workplace procedures
  10. Mechanical equipment is installed straight and square in the required locations and within acceptable tolerances in accordance with relevant industry standards
  11. Hand and power tools are used in accordance with safe working practices and WHS/OHS requirements and workplace procedures
  12. Work instructions are carried out under supervision
  13. Unplanned events are referred to relevant supervisor and directions are followed in accordance with workplace procedures
  14. Complete energy sector work activity
  15. Work site is cleaned and made safe in accordance with workplace procedures
  16. Supervisor is notified of work completion in accordance with workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two separate occasions and include:

applying relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements, including using of risk control measures

carrying out preparatory energy sector work activities in accordance with requirements, including:

maintaining fire integrity

placing and securing accessories accurately

routing, placing and securing cables

using testing devices

using hand and power tools safely and in accordance with workplace safe work practices

completing energy sector work and following instructions

planning and undertaking energy sector support activities.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

problem-solving techniques for unplanned situations/events

relevant hand, fixed and portable power tools, including:

associated hazards

care and maintenance

cutting, shaping, drilling, threading, tapping, and finishing metallic, non-metallic and structural components

different types of tools and their purpose

requirements for use on construction sites

techniques for the correct and safe use

tools for dismantling and assembling electrical and electronic components

tools for measuring and marking out

relevant industry standards

relevant job safety assessments or risk mitigation processes

relevant manufacturer specifications

relevant energy sector testing devices

relevant WHS/OHS legislated requirements

relevant workplace documentation

relevant workplace policies, procedures and instructions.
